a style of men's shoe considered deeply unfashionable or indicative of a certain social subgroup in the 1970s and 1980s (specified by Judy Rumbold, fashion editor of the Guardian, as 'maths teachers countrywide'). The pastie was so-called because of the sup-posed resemblance of the moulded-soled, heavily stitched shoe to the meat and vegetable savoury.
